MSU Sponsored International Travel

Faculty, staff, and students engaging in MSU sponsored international travel are eligible for health and safety support and must register their travel before departure.


Definition of MSU Sponsored International Travel

International travel will be considered MSU sponsored if:

  1. Participants include MSU faculty, staff, students, or approved guests (consultants, specialists etc.) as travelers, and,

  2. MSU has the ability to review/alter the conditions of the travel, and,

  3. The travel falls into at least one of the following categories:
    • Registered with the Office for Education Abroad
    • Funded, in whole or in part, by MSU
    • Connected to a job responsibility of one's employment at MSU as outlined by one's job description/assignment/responsibilities (proof of department/college sponsorship may be requested) 
    • Connected to one's enrollment at MSU. For example:
      • Non-credit degree requirement, with faculty/staff signature, such as required experiential learning experience (Pre-Trip Authorization Form or other proof may be requested)
      • Registered Student Organization (RSO) in which the RSO leadership is the primary organizer and faculty, staff, and/or advisor has demonstrated support (Pre-Trip Authorization Form or other proof may be requested)
      • Research relevant to degree program, dissertation, and/or as research assistant to MSU faculty or staff (Pre-Trip Authorization Form or other proof may be requested)
      • Participation in international conference, meeting, or performance approved by department or college (Pre-Trip Authorization Form or other proof may be requested)

Responsibilities of MSU Sponsored Travel

  1. MSU sponsored international travel must be registered in the MSU Global Travel Registry, with a pre-trip authorization form on file, or with the Office for Education Abroad, as deemed appropriate, and,

  2. Participants in MSU sponsored international travel and MSU sponsored international programs are subject to MSU policies.

Benefits for MSU Sponsored International Travel

International travel that is MSU sponsored is:

  1. Eligible for MSU-provided international health insurance and political/natural disaster evacuation insurance coverage within the limits of that policy, and,

  2. Eligible for Global Health, Safety, and Security support.
