Accessing Healthcare While Traveling Internationally During the COVID-19 Era

Anyone engaging in approved international travel should consider that COVID-19 may impact usual procedures for getting medical care abroad. Please review the information below carefully.

Students, faculty, staff, and approved guests on MSU-sponsored international travel are eligible for comprehensive international health insurance and medical and security assistance provided by International SOS.

  • Coverage includes medical evacuation, but there are limitations to evacuation during a pandemic that you should understand before you travel.
  • Coverage also includes a maximum $2,000 for covered expenses related to physician-directed quarantine. This includes up to $150/day for up to 10 days for meals and lodging while under a physician-directed quarantine, the cost of a one-way economy airfare ticket to either the traveler’s home country or to re-join the trip, and non-refundable travel arrangements. Please review full coverage details.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you should call International SOS immediately for guidance.

  • International SOS must comply with local and national regulations with respect to testing and treatment.
  • This may impact their ability to refer you to one of their preferred facilities or place a guarantee of payment. You may submit a reimbursement claim if you incur out-of-pocket medical expenses.

If you test positive for COVID-19, there will likely be local restrictions placed on your ability to travel. Neither MSU nor International SOS can circumvent local and national government regulations.

  • Like most international health insurance policies, MSU’s coverage has a pandemic exclusion. This means that non-medical evacuations relating to COVID-19 are not covered by MSU’s policy. Instead, travelers should plan to return to their home country by commercial flights.
